A big year for semantic technology?
2008 proved to a very successful year for technology despite worldwide financial uncertainty. Big advances were achieved by manufacturers of network computers, cloud computing service providers and social networking, all of which moved into mainstream acceptance by business as well as individuals.
As we start the new year, IT-Zone has a list of technology predictions for 2009. Among them is the emergence of the semantic web, also known as web 3.0.
The trendsetters in the world of technology are beginning to move into web 3.0, which is based around semi-intelligent sites and services that search and interpret the inherent meanings and contexts of phrases and images, otherwise known as semantic data.
The semantic web is based around new standard formats that define content and meanings rather than raw text. Instead of getting a million search results for a phrase, only the most relevant technical accounting pages appear at the top of the list. Browsers and search sites are also able to log your interests and preferences, seeking out content that may interest you or support your work.
Businesses are already starting to integrate the semantic web into their work systems, which will help them become more efficient and productive organisations.
