Beckham always looking for photo opportunity?
David Beckham remains the most marketable footballer on the planet, earning millions for various adverts and product endorsements. The Beckham brand is one of the most well-known and recognised in the world and continues to grow, despite Beckham nearing the end of his football career.
Recently Beckham made his debut for AC Milan, which was reported on the back pages of all the major newspapers. However, Steve Curry, sports journalist for the Daily Mail, mentioned something completely different on Sky Sports News; why is Beckham always the first person to jump on a goalscorer’s back and celebrate after a goal is scored?
This trend of Beckham celebrating so enthusiastically has happened ever since his days at Manchester United, and has continued throughout his playing career. Is Beckham just really happy that his team-mate has scored? Or, is it because he knows being on the goalscorer’s back celebrating will mean that he has more of a chance of being in the newspapers in the morning? Having his photograph in the newspapers will ensure that he is constantly in the limelight and will add increased exposure to the Beckham brand.
Even though this theory may seem cynical, it could potentially be a very clever ploy by Beckham’s marketing team. A way to maintain people’s interest in the Beckham brand is to have both Victoria and David constantly in the public’s eye.
The relentless paparazzi attention every time you walk to the newsagent to get some milk may get tiresome but I’m sure both of them are laughing all the way to the bank. Victoria Beckham launched her own fashion range and dress collection in 2008. Something made possible by the big media attention and public interest in the lives of her and her husband.
As long as the Beckhams are having their photos taken and stories written about them, both will continue to make money and their marketing brand will continue to grow. Many people find it hard to remember what the two of them were originally famous for; such is the strength of the brand. The Beckhams are a lean, mean marketing machine!
